What We're Riding

Ratings:
= We'd rather eat a soggy bike sock than buy this thing. = Pretty good. Could use improvement, but functional.
= If someone gives it to you, maybe. It's a paperweight. = Sweeeeet. We'd buy it. It won't cure cancer though.
= We'd use it if we were in a bind. Maybe. = Dude, it does everything including wash your car. It rules!
Gu20 Electrolyte Drink Mix
There's plenty of different kinds of drink mixes out on the market, and it's hard to find one that works well for you individually. We've found that Gu20 has been one of the better products we've tried. We had the pleasure of trying this mix on road rides, short races and long epic torture trail rides. We've found that it does a reasonably good job of keeping the body supplied with quick burning carbs. Malodextrin and fructose are the first and most plentiful ingredients, so the mix is designed as a supplement or replacement for energy gels. Included in the mixture is a fair amount of electrolytes, but we found that it really wasn't enough to keep some testers from cramping (some people are more prone to cramping than others) without supplementing with some other electrolytes.
The major gripe we had with the Gu? This stuff clumps in a water bottle terribly. It's very hard to get it to dissolve without pouring it in hot water and then putting the bottle in the fridge. Not very convenient for those of us who fly by the seat of their pants. Bah. -Rob Manning

Pedros Tire Levers
It's hard to believe you could be so dependent upon something so small, and so happy to find something that works well. That's just how we feel about Pedros tire levers. Built tough, these levers are probably the next best thing to a steel core tire lever, and they're nice and gentle on tire beads as well. The excellent hook design gets under stubborn beads and the very well designed spoke hook keeps the lever on the wheel while working the bead off. We found that these levers are great for stubborn tires that we couldn't get a regular lever under. We were unable to snap them off, no matter how hard we tried; conversely, we broke half a dozen other tire levers in half. Anything that we can't break gets a good score in our book. -RM
