Merrell 2009 Line
Clothing As Tough As The People Who Wear It
It’s been suggested that our love for getting dirty pretty much prevents the MBT test crew from ever being mistaken for the fashion kings and queens of 5th Avenue. However, there are a few brands out there who understand the fine balance of performance and style; in other words there’s no rule that says you can’t look great while doing what you love. Enter Merrell, a company that we’re just tickled pink to work with each season. Not only do these guys make some of the best looking, most durable garments that we’ve ever draped across our tired bodies but they’re active supporters of the outdoor lifestyle as well (they sponsor the National Park Foundation, not to mention are active in an events calendar that includes everything from white water rafting, marathon running, to mountain biking mud fests). In other words, Merrell doesn’t just talk the talk they walk the walk.
This year we spent a few weeks using and abusing three of their men’s shirts, each of which serves a very different climate purpose but does so with the outstanding fit, finish, comfort and style that separates Merrell from the rest.

Balance.

Balance
We’ll begin by telling you about the short-sleeve Balance which is constructed of Bio-Blend, Merrell's recycled, sustainable fabric. In feel the Bio-Blend feels silky and non-confining while their patented Opti-Wick moisture management system beads up water on the exterior while wicking away sweat from within.
Sleeves are made of Raglan, which offers unrivalved range of motion, and Flatlock stitching on the shoulders means no abrasions from rough seams.
Conclusion:
The Balance is stylish enough to wear right to the restaurant after the ride and its moisture wicking properties go a long way in resisting staining. Ours still looks and fits like brand new after repeated washings.
Trial
The Merrell Trial most closely resembles the definition of a true mountain biking jersey of the three garments we took a look at. With full sleeves, almost liquid-like flow, and effective venting, this beauty is all-weather ready.
Like the Balance, the Trial features Merrell’s Opti-Wick moisture management coupled to a lightweight 100% polyester construction. Its hefty moisture-wicking capabilities are designed to move body-chilling sweat quickly away from the skin.
Long trips under the scorching sun aren’t a concern as well thanks to ultraviolet protected fabric (Ultraviolet Protection Factor 20+). Night rides and road jaunts benefit by the integrated reflective taping on back and front shoulder and Flatlock stitching throughout prevents seam abrasion.
Conclusion:
The Trial, in its beautiful Dark Olive motif, was a favorite for long rides where the possibility of being caught out after dark is present. Venting is spectacular and the shirt never feels restrictive. It’s not quite as public-friendly as the Balance but on the trails, it simply doesn’t get any better than this.

Excellent cold weather protection.

Alloy
Here in NY we know a thing or two about riding in cold conditions. In fact we know more than we would like to about it! Fortunately Merrell understands where we’re coming from and the Alloy is proof of their experience on the subject. Imagine a foam fleece jacket with impressive wind-breaking ability combined with Merrell’s top-notch moisture wicking abilities on the inside and you have an idea of what the Alloy’s all about.
Featuring Merrell’s Opti-Stretch technology, the Alloy is constructed of slick-faced stretchy outer fleece panels. The thick foam fleece is designed to keep the rider warm and protected from the elements.
Opti-Wick mesh panels on the collar and inside pockets prevent clamminess from sweat and condensation while stretchy microfleece increases mobility. The lightweight perforated foam fabric retains body heat, while laminated tricot breathes out perspiration during highly aerobic cold-weather activities. Additional features include 360° reflectivity on the shoulders and a zipper-secure pocket on the arm.
Conclusion:
The Alloy should be every cool-weather climate rider’s first choice bar none. It manages to combine the rarest of traits: protection from the cold ambient air (made even cooler by motion) while breathing internally while wicking away sweat. The end result is perceived warmth on even the coolest rides. Our testers reported feeling drier and warmer while sporting the Alloy on cold dewy mornings and near-freezing night rides (and just think this is what we consider summer). This is a spectacular product that can definitely be worn into society once the ride concludes.
